At Maersk Tankers, we take a proactive approach to health, safety and security by constantly seeking out innovative ideas and new areas for improvement, and through painstaking reporting and follow-up work.
Companies normally want to see as few incident reports as possible, but there is a category where a high number of reports is a good thing: near misses.
A near miss is when something could have happened, but didn’t. These incidents raise safety awareness, and a high number of reports usually means that crews are taking safety seriously. It’s also a sign of a business culture that values learning from mistakes.
In 2009, the number of near miss incidents at Maersk Tankers rose by 30%. It’s a statistic we’re proud of.
Today, safety at sea also involves anti-piracy measures. Like the rest of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group, we monitor the situation off the coast of Somalia very closely, and are in constant contact with the relevant authorities on how best to deal with the situation.
